We began our tour of Civil War battlefields as part of our vacation trip to Washington, D.C. It was only appropriate to first go to Manassas, as it was the site of the first land battle of the Civil War. We went during June of 2011, the 150th anniversary of the start of the war between the North and the South.
Later, we made a trip to Gettysburg to visit the battlefield that turned the tide of the war.We must admit, that the visit impressed us greatly, and we decided that during the next four years, we want to visit as many Civil War era battlefields and locations as possible. We plan to document each location here, as we make our travels of the Civil War.
Recently, we visited 4 more Civil War locations. The first was Kennesaw Mountain just north of Atlanta, Georgia. What a beautiful location. We then stopped at Olustee Battlefield near Lake City, Florida. They were celebrating the 148th anniversary of the battle when we arrived. After Olustee, we stopped at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Finally, we stopped at the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park.
